  • President’s Message
  • Have you ever heard of a term “Butterfly Effect”?
It is a theory by Edward N. Lorenz, a US meteorologist. It refers to the idea that a butterfly’s wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in a certain location. The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale alterations of events. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different.
Of course the butterfly cannot literally cause a tornado. It basically indicates that an insignificant and unintentional behavior of an individual can have a tremendous effect somewhere far away.
  • This theory can be applied to our environment.
  • Did you know that there is a connection between cell phone use and the survival of gorillas?
Cell phones contain a mineral extract called coltan; a mineral extracted in the deep forest of Congo in Central Africa, which is a home to one of the endangered lowland gorillas. As cell phone usage continues to be on the rise, the value of coltan has been sky-rocketing. As a result, a coltan mine was established in Congo’s Kahuzi-Biega National Park. This mining caused a complete destruction of Gorillas’ habitat.
However, this is not just a matter of cell phones and Gorillas. Behind the success of every human being, there has always been a sacrifice of some form of natural resources. Mother Nature was ruthlessly destroyed by human beings in the name of convenience. This brought about extreme changes and crisis to the earth, such as resource exhaustion and species extinction, causing frequent natural disasters. This has now become a threat to the very survival of mankind.
  • Today, people are beginning to confront unprecedented environmental crisis. It is time we take action.
  • Regardless of sector, people must come together to create a better environment. We need environmental policies and collaborative partnership for the conservation of our environment. Only then will our efforts ensure a better quality of life for all mankind. We must restore a safe ecological environmental relationship between humans and nature, for present as well as future generations.
I assure you that every little bit of our efforts are an essential step to protecting the environment.
Actions for the Earth! Love for the Earth! It is our responsibility!
  • Sincerely,

    Kyeong Yool Lee
    President
    Environment Action Association
